Taylor - Whats done is done

May 1st, 2008 - Created by: Taylor

The damage has been done when on the last day i received 694 all that in one day, wow it hit the record books for me, I’m just amazed about those results, stunned. Haven’t been able to check it all but when you think about that number imagine pages upon pages of new Spam email like this in you daily email. Think if for one day you got that many letters in the mail, it would over flow. I’ll write it out just how many i received, six hundred and ninety four. WOW its a big number no matter how its told. My total was 4450 emails in my one month, which worked our to 1 email every 10minutes, no matter what stage. I’m sure if we where able to graph it however it wouldn’t be just one horizontal line, it would be a progressive curve, that as time went on I’m sure it would do nothing but rise. Well its stunning, to think that now its done, finished. wow, what to do?? Its been a pleasure. T

John — day 30

Spams now up to 4,464

Unsubscribing from every mail was painful — but it worked. The number of spams are more manageable but I would not like to go through that again.

The Wixawin.com finally contacted me yesterday and entered me into a knock-out round. The prize though had been changed from a MacBook Air to $500 worth of Greater Union movie tickets :-). They were legally within their rights — they always reserved that option. But it is still annoying — though, sadly, expected.

The knock out round consisted of about four questions which I answered in turn. The final question is a race to see who replies first with the most accurate answer. In my haste I misread the question :-( . I was supposed to search a Northern Territories government website and find out the relative humidity had been about a week ago at 3:15pm. I — like a klutz — returned the temperature. When I realised my mistake I tried to re-submit my answer but it started me at question one again (bizarre). Besides, my pre-paid mobile account also ran out of money as I submitted the answer :-)

Anyway, mission accomplished. It is a very expensive exercise although you can win prizes. I suspect though that a fast Internet connection and the ability to type quickly into a PDA will give anyone an unfair advantage.

Significantly – I didn’t receive any SMS spam.

I get my “Today’s laugh of the day” and Recipe for the day. It includes a small “sponsors” advert which is really not prominent. It’s just a pity they had to sneak in behind a spam mail, because it’s a fairly non-offensive way to get attention.

“Barrister” Charles Moore from Nigeria sent me images of some very authentic looking documentation proving me as the beneficiary of Rose Maxwell’s $1,200,000. I’m sure McAfee will let you have copies if you request them. The “Barrister” asked, fair enough, for a 20% cut. The problem is that her Certificate of Will — authentic as it appears — was signed in November 1999. I wasn’t anywhere near Australia then, and certainly didn’t have my fake identity then, and of course the address is fictitious. I’ve asked Mr Moore to alleviate my concerns — I don’t want to go to jail for fraud. Alas, I’m beginning to despair that Mr Moore will have to enjoy the loot on his own.

I listened to the business case conference call for Liberty League International last night and it’s certainly an authentic business model and the compensation scheme is impressive. Still, its main product is a series of Anthony-Robbins-like multi-media training DVD’s and very expensive “pep-talk” conferences. Just buying the multi-media kit and attending the first conference in Hawaii this year will set me back about $9,500. Of course if you can get others to join the business you will offset your costs (even turn a profit). That seems to be the key to success — network marketing. You certainly can make money, but I have my own ideas on personal development and it’s going to cost a lot less than that :-). But good luck to them.

I’m going to have one or two more conversations with Barrister Charles Moore before I tell him I’ve just been investigating spam. I don’t think he is going to be very pleased.

Spam at a glance

I know it is not over yet - but I just wanted to provide an overview of the experience I have had so far. I will first start by saying it has been an incredibly annoying one living a month in the life of a spam reciever!!Seriously can they give email users a break - we know nothing is for free, nothing is as easy as they say and if we want what you have on offer we would be seeking it - not ignoring their intense emails!!!

This goes out to the spam creators:

If your offer(s) are as good as you say I would be a millionaire, with plenty of free loans, oodles of free software, a killer job, a PHD that took 5 days, Brad Pitt, the secrets of poker mastered, a partner in every part of the world and not to mentioned enlargments, extensions and enhancements of all human body parts. But the truth is I have none of the above and that is how I would like to keep it!!

One of my favorites is the job I have mentioned I have been employed to do and am recieving payments - apparently. Anyway, my one hundredth and second email stated: ‘I am worried’. They are actually worried about my welfare as they think something has happened for me not to collect the payments for doing the work that I was assigned. For one, I have to enter my credit card details to collect - which clearly is not going to happen, and secondly I have to do the work and manage a team - also not happening. I am still being paid though and it is nice they are looking out for me! Not! Get the message - I don’t work for you!

Ok sorry for ranting - the spam is really starting to frusturate me!!!!!!!!

All the ends of the earth

Hair Restoration!! i got a spam for hair restoration.. first time ive even heard about such a thing in spam. But once again, this just shows that spam is just really advertising and that it really does no harm until you start encountering a sent package.

Also i am still getting spam only from america. nowhere else. which is pretty interesting. i wonder if spam is actually illegal in aus.

But everything else seems to be the same at the moment, I will try to probe further into spam tomorrow.

Site Advisor to the rescue

April 29th, 2008 - Created by: sue

I have gained a massive appreciation for spam protection soft ware. I usually do not realise the amount of spam and potential viruses that come through my inbox as it is automatically filtered! They continue to get ruder and more repulsive! Although I did get my dream email the subject line stated ‘Brad Pitt wants to get closer’. However, I was quickly devastated when I realised it must have been spam as it wouldn’t open - I tried quite a few times just in case =>I am also realising how important programs like Site Advisor are! I was doing my usual search for pages related to spam and I came across Alibaba news which was simply a news page that focuses on violence around the world. Site Advisor warned me that down loading pages from that site may result in spam, and as I was downloading from the site I received a few site advisor pop ups and they warned me again and then I received a different pop up that warned me for the third time, this time the pop up stated a virus had been detected!! This is serious business! I didn’t realise how easy it was to contract a virus on how dangerous some of these sites are! I will rely heavily on site advisor from now on! This brings me to my next problem – I think my computer may be damaged by the spam – not certain – I am having someone have a look at it – as it keeps warning about fatal errors – I am a little concerned to say the least! I will be very interested to see the verdict!

John — day twenty eight.

April 28th, 2008 - Created by: john

Spams now up to 4,441 — 40 in the past day. Now that I have become more adventurous again I can expect more spam. Over the past week or so I wanted to see what effect unscribing from all of the mails would have — it was quite significant.
¼br> The Wixawin.com still hasn’t come back to me with a date for the Knock-out round. And I haven’t received any sms spams either.

LOTTO INTERNATIONAL PROMOTIONS let me know I’ve won Euro 1 Million. I can’t wait to start spending. I’ve replied to them and asked them to tell me what banking information they need.

I haven’t received my “Today’s laugh of the day” yet.

MR JUDE OGO of Nigeria asked me how I wanted the money I am owed. I chose option: 1. Telegraphic Transfer (TT) which wires Funds directly to your own bank account. I’ll let you know what the next step is.

“Barrister” Charles Moore contacted me on behalf of Rose Maxwell widow to the late Mr. Ted Grant Maxwell (Charles Moore was the contact person Mrs Maxwell asked me to respond to). I got an sms from him asking me to check my email and get back to him asap. He sounds desperate to give me my $1.2 Million. His email gives me a number to call. I’ll call him tomorrow.

Mr Felix Ugo also got back to me regarding a million dollars I was to receive. He urged me: “I will like to inform you that your certified bank draft will be sent to you through FedEx representative here in my office and as the beneficiary, you have to pay for the cost of delivery which is the sum of $320 usd”. I told him that FedEx do not associate themselves with any company demanding fees before delivery — it is stated quite clearly on their website. It would be great if InterPol could investigate cases like this.

I got a response from the homebusinessextreme site asking me to call and discuss the home based business. Turns out it has to do with Liberty League International. I’m going to attend the conference call tomorrow evening.

Sentero.net offer free mp3’s but it is so poorly designed, even though I want to buy and download mp3’s I just can seem to do it.

I tried a legitimate site: themp3site . org but they couldn’t even find the song I asked for. It was the last song I heard on the radio as I drove home — John Farnham’s “Even after all this time”.  Sentero did even respond when I typed in this song in the search field. Incredible.

payplay. fm - 25 songs free, no strings attached. So I sign up, and find out that the free songs are chosen for me. I go down the list and don’t recognise a single one. Like everyone, I’m sure, I’d rather pay for steak than get turd for free.

John — day twenty seven.

April 27th, 2008 - Created by: john

Spams now up to 4,401 — only 90 in the past four days. So I’m down from a peak of 278 per day to about 22 a day. It goes to show, that if you are unfortunate enough to give you email address to the wrong site, you could end up with thousands of spams, unless you painstakingly respond to every one – requesting to be unsubscribed. And that is a very time consuming exercise (remember you have to unsubscribe from every mail as each one represents a unique advert — you’re subscribing from that specific advert only).

The Wixawin.com site has taken about $44 from me. The first $10 was just to test my ability to unsubscribe without further harassment. That worked. I then spent about $34 getting through the first round of their online quiz. They said that I was through to the Knock-out round and that they would send me the date of the quiz. No notification yet. I’ll wait a couple more days (I guess they need a minimum of 30-40 subscribers to pay for the MacBook Air so that they can give it to the winner and still make money).

In the meantime I have been expecting spam sms’s but haven’t received any yet.

The most frequent spam I get is to enter an SMS subscription. You are guaranteed to hand over money and it’s ridiculous what they offer you. For example, I’m usually offered a free realtone. But before you sign up you need to note that the small print states: “The SECOND realtone is free. To stop this subscription service? Text STOP WREAL42 to 191192, or just text STOP to 191192.”

That sounds reasonable, but just getting your free realtone and unsubscribing will cost you about $12 - $16 (and that’s assuming you won’t be paying $4 per message each way — as Wixawin does except they charge $2.50 each way).

Otherwise, if you go ahead and subscribe, you get: “3 realtones per week. Service costs: $4.00 sign up fee plus $4.00 per msg inc. GST, Maximum 6 messages/week ($24.00 per week). Standard text messaging rates may apply”.

LOTTO INTERNATIONAL PROMOTIONS let me know I’ve won Euro 1 Million. I can’t wait to start spending. I’ve replied to them and asked them to tell me what banking information they need.

I also received: “Today’s laugh of the day: Don’t miss out on your daily dose of laughter. Confirm that you want to continue to receive A Quick Laugh on Monday-Friday. You won’t receive any junk mail, and we don’t share your infomation”. I’m interested to see if they are legitimate.

FROM THE DESK OF MR JUDE OGO. Another generous Nigerian payment…thank you, what banking details do you need?

Rose Maxwell widow to the late Mr. Ted Grant Maxwell wants to leave me $1.2 Million — Nigerian based obviously. I said: “Thank you…please tell me where to pick it up”. As before I’ll probably be required to pay a hundred or so dollars to a security company to “release it”. But I’ll wait and see.

I responded to homebusinessextreme website and will see what they are offering. I got the message via spam and I’m going to be asking them to explain to me just how they are involved in spamming me.

I also signed up on sentero . net for free mp3 downloads. I get my registration and it shows I have a credit of $2.50. But every time I click on a song to buy it, the server sends back an error: “Moving to a new data centre, you may have trouble downloading mp3’s”. I’ll test it over the next few days, but that is a very strange start. I want to test sites that take money for downloading mp3 songs.

Taylor - Count down to the end, 4 days left

April 27th, 2008 - Created by: Taylor

How will it end? Will there be a break i think with only 4 days left i dont think there will be a break i’ll just have to go on with out one, same with all of us, we’ll just go on with out a break from this spam.. I feel like every day its the same story, its not a new chapter or a new series, its the same episode being replayed everyday until we can get onto the new one. When will that be? well you’ve got me there. Got a solid 300 and its still not that satisfying anymore, you just dont know whats going on, its the same stuff your getting i dont think i’ve seen anything new in the past 4 days, same old same old? Is it always like this and if it is, is there a easier way to stop the spam? T

Everytime I seem to interact I get to survey’s to win computers, IPods etc - does anyone else get the feeling this is designed to get your Telco provider and phone number so your accout can get charged in some manner - like you had signed up to ring tones or something??

Looking into the environment lately….judging by volume in the last couple of days - environmental concerns or ethical issues are no shelter from cash offers, latin singles in my area or ofcourse the old chestnut women love men who take the little blue pill! give me strength………..

Taylor - Information Technology

Our famous IT department, what does it teach our students? ways to exploit people? Interesting spam i got today which where all targeting my credit cards offering me better deals, discounts, short term loans, no payments ever… whats that mean? ever.. will i ever stop getting spam? Thinking of a way we can resaulve this issue with spam is that if there was an intergrated way where we as users could submit our spam in order for it to be permintly deleted and then be deleted for everyone else, it would just be something simple but would be really effective for the pubic, some web emails eg: gmail and hotmail now have a report spam button, however i dont belive that these are intergrated. Think if everyone had a intergrated system where we shared the information of doggie emails and just help slow this from of attack down. We can only hope someone decides to put some money into this thought and helps us out.
